Suddenly this doesn't seem so horrible (by today's standards) My parents had one and USED it:

When my son was about three and a half, I had a newborn girl. I hated shopping with him, because he thought it was absolutely hysterical to hide in the clothing racks, prompting me to panic.

When you have more little ones than you have hands, it is not easy.

No, not easy, but possible and done for eons. The first time said child hides in the clothes rack and thinks it’s funny, said child gets his or her bottom warmed— that soon puts an end to that. that’s the way my parents handled it and so did I. Both of my Millennial aged children have been raised to successful adulthood.
