Bobcat electrocuted after climbing utility pole in Lakin

Crazy photos out of Western Kansas circulating on Facebook are backed by a report from Wheatland Electric.

Tuesday morning, a Wheatland Electric Cooperative line crew responded to a routine outage call near Lakin.

"Upon arrival, crews found the meter off and proceeded to isolate the source of the outage," Wheatland Electric says. "A Wheatland lineman patrolling line nearby discovered a bobcat that had come into contact with energized lines. The bobcat climbed to the top of a 35-foot electric pole and made contact simultaneously with a phase wire and a ground wire which resulted in the animal's electrocution."

Hard to believe. You are telling me a Bobcat takes a dead dear to the top of a power pole to protect it’s prey from all but eagles, hawks, owls, and vultures? Lion maybe, bobcat hard to believe.

Had a friend who kept a semi-tame bobcat in his fourteen foot tall living room with trees in all four corners which allowed cat to roam above the prey. He liked the owner, but was wary of visitors.

My power provider. Not fake. He grounded his leg on the poles ground wire while in contact with the hot wire. His jaws locked on that wire is why he did not fall.

Freak happenstance. Every pole in this part of the world has a ground wire. There is a lot of radio interference if not. And a great deal lightning.

I believe the deer was hit by a train and landed there.
