Washington's 400. I will forever think of them as I do the 3/5 Dark Horse Marines who fought in Afghanistan before my son arrived.
Happy, peaceful, Independence Day, America!

Another good read which is available gratis on the web at:
http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyschoha/roscoes.html
The author interviewed many primary sources, and details the struggles of what was then a frontier community against tories and indians encouraged by the British in Canada.

I found this in the archives, that literally 15 months before the battle of Long Island, somebody foreshadows what these guys are going to go through in a letter, and they say theyre going to go up against thousands, just like the Spartans did against the Persians. Its signed Agamemnon, who was the king of Greece at the time. Its just fascinating, said ODonnell. Yup. That was me alright!
Happy 4th!

I stopped at a graveyard in Massachusetts some years ago. History interests me greatly.
I was looking at the ages of the dead and was struck by something odd. It was a very old graveyard. Their was an abundance of young women of child bearing age that died. That was quite normal as child birth has a high rate of mortality in the young without modern medicine. I also noted a similar rate of death by age in the men. That puzzled me until I realized this was during The War of Independence when I looked at the dates of death of the men. Many were without doubt patriot soldiers in The War of Independence.
I was humbled. As I left the graveyard I turned and saluted.
