Regents math test is easier to pass – thanks to low standards

I remember sweating the Regents exams. Back in the late 1950s on Eastern Long Island. Much has changed.

YUP! '58-'62 in NYC a Regents Diploma had value. I just barely managed to earn one. But still, I got it.

As a retired Math teacher, this saddens me. Algebra 1 is fundamental to any further study in math, or in anything that uses formulas. If there's a clear-cut test of the topics covered in Algebra 1, anyone who has mastered the subject should score at least 90%.

Fancier tests that are scaled don't really answer who knows the math. Instead, they ascertain who is best at guessing. Just what we need....people who are good at guessing instead of knowing basic Math facts getting ahead. (NOT!!!)

Thanks for posting.

Most of those questions were trivial to anyone with basic skills in math.

However, some of the questions would have been really tough for someone not formally trained in math.

Found the disparity odd.
