The “broken window” approach to law enforcement works. Utter a slanderous word and there was a price or two to pay. License to broadcast could be lost. Definitely you were fined, and you were also held personally liable and could be personally sued. Unsourced reports slanderous in nature were unheard of.
The same broken window approach worked with verbal threats of any.kind. toward a sitting president and a cascade of broadcasting to incite riots, threats and harm on anyone were met with consequences.
We still have an FCC. There are still, standards. There is simply no enforcement of law at the top.
