BEAUMONT, Texas (KFDM) - Detectives say they have been told by a credible witness that a 22-year-old Beaumont, Texas man shot and killed 19-year-old Kera Teel last week.
Teel was seven months pregnant and her baby, Kyndal Jae Teel, died shortly after emergency delivery.
Jared Javon Bias, 22, faces a capital murder charge in the killings, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by KFDM 6 News. Investigators had been trying to link a series of incidents from the early morning hours of June 6, when Teel was gunned down at the Sienna Trail Apartments.
Community donations over the past week reached more than $21,000 as the reward for pertinent information.
Information eventually led investigators to Lake Charles, where they found 17-year-old Atayanna Douglas.
Douglas is believed to have been at the murder scene and police say she named three others involved in the shooting.
Bias was identified as the shooter, the affidavit states.
Jared Javon Bias was already in jail on an unrelated robbery charge. Kara Teel, shot without resistance in a robbery where nothing was taken, leaves behind a grieving husband and a one-year old daughter.
I remember this clearly reported black-on-white unprovoked murder. I also remember that a number of FReepers tried to advance the idea that she was killed by her husband, possibly in a contract killing. I wish fewer people would not reach such conclusions automatically.
Sometimes an unprovoked black-on-white murder is just that. It’s what they do.
Put 100lb steel weights on his ankles and drop him off in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico.
I’m mildly suspicious about the confession. There was so much pressure on the local gangs, the gang leaders may have told him that he had to take the fall for this crime to take the pressure off.
Those things happen. I was on the jury panel for one, 'long about 1995. It's not crazy to consider it, in the absence of a full set of facts.
Let's wait and see if other details (recovery of the murder weapon, perhaps) emerge.
I think sometimes a crime can be so cold-blooded and senseless that people have to assume there had to have been some sort of motive. It's the only way they can process it.
As a husband and father, this crime hit me hard. I've been googling Kera's name every day now hoping they'd find the killer. I hope they can now close this case.
It was a gang of teenagers, each probably with IQs around 80. Murdering a pregnant wife and mother in a random robbery means this guy will leave prison in a pine box, hopefully sooner rather than later. Not something someone is going to take the fall for.
FYI.
Not much information beyond the ID of the killer.
You reminded me. I remember now my wife who was a primary LD school teacher said that. I bet many primary school teachers said it.
