THE Godfather has pipped The Empire Strikes Back to be voted greatest movie of all time.
The 1972 Mafia epic that starred Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone topped a poll by film mag Empire of 20,000 readers.
At third was Christopher Nolans 2008 Batman film The Dark Knight, for which Heath Ledger won an Oscar for his performance as The Joker.
The Shawshank Redemption came fourth, despite often being hailed best-ever film online.
La La Land released six months ago came 62nd.
The all-time top ten are as follows:
1. The Godfather
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. The Dark Knight
4. The Shawshank Redemption
5. Pulp Fiction
6. Goodfellas
7. Raiders of the Lost Ark
8. Jaws
9. Star Wars
10. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
But the Chicks are Hot!
Is that Wrong?
Not wrong at all. Clark Gable, from my standpoint.
162 posts and not one mention of True Grit!? Where am I DU? LOL
And
What about Bob?.....funnyyyyyyy ,!!!!!
Life is Beautiful, always makes me tear up when I watch it.
Elmer also did the music for "Animal House", and it's one of the things that makes it great.
No Last Summer in Marienbad? How about Zabriskie Point?
Seriously? I'll have to check that out!!!
I appreciated the film as a representation of a dreadful time in history, but Begnini's over-the-top tone did not do it for me. Two other films depicting that period were very meaningful to me: The Pianist with Adrien Brody -- I think he may have won an Oscar for that -- and Julia, based on a WWII novel by Lillian Hellman.
And there is also the lovely 1970 Vittorio de Sica film about the ominous rise of fascism as affecting the Italian upper classes, many of whom were Jewish: The Garden of the Finzi-Continis.
I admit Life is Beautiful had some plot holes you could drive a tank through. I certainly understand why it wasn’t some people’s cup of tea.
Goodbye, Lenin! is in my Top Five List. Another movie that will make you laugh and cry.
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
The Good The Bad and The Ugly
Once Upon A Time In the West
The Music Man
Picnic
Outlaw Jose Wales
A criminally overlooked movie IMHO, is Billy Wilder’s “One, Two, Three”, with one of the greatest comedic performances put on film, by James Cagney.
Oh gosh, What About Bob is a hoot.
YES!
I would also add these 9:
Wuthering Heights
Jaws
It’s a Wonderful Life
Disney’s Cinderella
The Encounter (Christian film)
Hans Christian Anderson
The Omen
Grease
A Bronx Tale
Maybe not the greatest, but ranking high in my favorites!
Still, Id rather watch that than Shawshank or Pulp Fiction.
I'll go with Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Strangelove, Forbidden Planet, On the Waterfront, ... but then Duck Soup ( or Night at the Opera ), 2001 ( for sure ) , The Godfather, Pinocchio, Caddyshack ... how about Frozen ? ( The kids love it, and it is good ! )
There are a lot of good movies!, Yeah, Wizard of Oz has to be in there! ... Ghostbusters! ... Unforgiven! ...
Ha! Which ones did I get right?
Hopefully someone else will get a laugh..."
Megaforce is deadly serious.
There is nothing funny about Megaforce.
