Horrifying pictures emerged on social media showing massive flames licking up the side of the block

Desperate residents are building ropes from sheets in an attempt to escape from their windows as a huge inferno is engulfing a tower block in west London.
The 'horrendous' blaze has struck the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in Latimer Road, White City, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The fire has reportedly spread to five floors, with firefighters struggling to bring it under control. There are 40 fire engines and 200 firefighters at the Lancaster West Estate.
Desperate residents trapped high in the enormous tower were heard 'screaming' for help as they built ropes from sheets in an attempt to reach the ground. One neighbour said he believed someone had jumped from the block.
The residential block has hundreds of residents two of whom are being treated for illness from smoke inhalation.
Terrified residents in their pyjamas have been evacuated as police are pushing people away from the area for fear the block will collapse as debris has started to fall from the tower.

Maybe, but it looks like a real fire not an explosion that caused a fire. We’ll see.
Either way that looks like a horror movie.
"...Russia! Russia! Russia!..."
Yeah. That is a massive fire. I can't believe how it's totally engulfed this large tower. I could see a few floors being impacted, but it looks like all of them.
One witness said he thinks the fire started in the apartment next to his. He said he heard a bang, which he thinks may have been from an appliance as people were cooking at that time (approx. 1 a.m.) after fasting for Ramadan.
This is a housing project type residence.
.
There is a report of an explosion according to an eyewitness.
Yeah, they're saying it was an exploding electrical appliance. Apparently there has been a fire or fires there previously as one witness mentioned that.
Unless it was electrical. We’ll see.
Yeah, they started building tower-type housing structures in the 50's and 60's there.
I hear that people said the fire alarms weren’t working. Still didn’t hear anything about a sprinkler system installed or not.
Was the sprinkler system sabotaged?
One guy who escaped said he heard an explosion when the fire started.
I think the guy on the 4th floor just assumed that it was an appliance. Just the way it sounded to me.
I think we need to chill a little with this one and wait and see only because of this area is like public housing and if the UK is like the US, those types of buildings are run down and violating all kind of fire and building codes even though the government pays the rent for most of the people who live in them.
True. Speculation at best. Who knows what they were up to. Now Mayor Khan will have to find all new places for his muzzie friends. According to one article: "The tower block was built in the 1970s as part of the Lancaster West Estate project."
Yes, a use of an accelerant.
Incredible
If that is a muzzie building there will be a lot of revenge no matter the cause.
Probably a terrorist building a bomb set it off by accident.
You’re probably right.
