Another article said the local volunteer fire company made the decision to let the fire burn itself out.

What else would you do?

There may have been no other alternative given the height of the structure, falling debris, turning blades, and other dangers. The whole thing will probably be torn down anyhow to fix and replace it.

Some have died in the turbine fire incidents which occur with regularity. In one instance two guys out of four performing maintenance topside, became trapped by a generator fire blocking access to the pylon ladder.
