So you do know what I’m talking about...Good times, great memories, lifelong friends. Friends that got me back to the ship when I was, *ahem*, not feeling well in all kinds of foreign ports and I did the same for them...

That is a great analogy! I became a Shellback on 25 March 1993 on board the USS Tripoli with The 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit as a young Sgt. I can still smell that god awful fish sauce the Filipino sailors put on everything.

The threat of Shellback Initiation was so dire that our ship, which was southbound out of Singapore for Sydney, broke a main reduction gear about 50 miles north of the equator and we had to be towed back for repairs never making it over the line. There was a pretty good ratio of Pollywogs in the crew.
