Probably the most notable volcanic aviation incident happened to an Australian 747 that flew threw a newly created PI (Philippines) ash cloud one night.

Choked all four engines. Can’t remember how far the plane descended before the crew got the engines started again.

Then again, during WWII, Mt. Vesuvius erupted, damaging/destroying a 100 or so USAAF aircraft on the ground.
