Culture Nazis have claimed another victory by shutting down a small business in Portland.
The pop-up shop Kooks Burritos sold authentic Mexican food and that simply would not do.
See, white people making tacos is cultural appropriation they say, and better to force the place out of business than put up with that.
Kali Wilgus and LC Connelly are owners were owners of Kooks Burritos. They took a trip to Mexico to pick the brain of the local tortilla makers and brought their cooking secrets back to the states.
I picked the brains of every tortilla lady there in the worst broken Spanish ever, and they showed me a little of what they did, Connelly told Willamette Weekly.
They told us the basic ingredients, and we saw them moving and stretching the dough similar to how pizza makers do before rolling it out with rolling pins. They wouldnt tell us too much about technique, but we were peeking into the windows of every kitchen, totally fascinated by how easy they made it look. We learned quickly it isnt quite that easy.

After living in New Mexico
most of my life there is no
comparison (at least to my
taste buds) between New
Mexico style “Mexican”
cuisine and Tex-Mex.
The state question is
“red or green?”. The hotter,
the better.
Chipotle for me was nothing
more than a yuppie fad
establishment. No one in
their right mind makes a
rice burrito...
At least in Texas, places
like Chuey’s use ground
beef.
