
I would think that the issue would be one of qualifications and character, not gender.
Plenty of babysitters are male, so I don't see why that would be "stupid" on the part of a parent.
I did my share of babysitting in my youth—being male is certainly not disqualifying, and, indeed, has some distinct advantages, as far as "ability to protect" is concerned.
A babysitter is someone who is implicitly trusted—no parent should hire any babysitter they haven't interviewed, and who they don't trust with their children's safety.
