Hollywood may experience one of the worst slumps at the box office in the last decade this summer as Americans grow tired of the seemingly endless number of sequels and big-budget tentpoles churned out by the film industry.
Multiple reports by the the Hollywood Reporter show box office revenues are on track to decline by five percent this summer season when compared with last year, and could drop by as much as ten percent.
In real dollars, that could calculate out to a net loss of $450 million for Hollywoods film industry, with summer earnings for movies expected at about $4 billion, which would make box office performance during this years summer season the worst in at least ten years.
The second weekend of summer hints at trouble to come, as Warner Bros/Village Roadshows pricey tentpole King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is set to debut to around $25 million in its opening weekend, a disastrous projection when compared with its reported $175 million budget, before marketing costs.
the real test will come later this summer, when Paramount trots out Transformers: The Last Knight and Disney releases Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, both of which represent the fifth entries in their respective, decade-long franchises.
There appear to be at least a couple of bright spots this summer, Christopher Nolans World War II drama Dunkirk are expected to perform well for Universal and Warner Bros., respectively.
But some executives are already blaming the upcoming seasons over-saturation with sequels for the projected decline in box office.
Some of the tent poles are just not as strong this year, 20th Century Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson told the Times. Pirates of the Caribbean? Its the fifth one. Transformers? Its the fifth one.

Just saw it in iMax 3D - fantastic, great tunes. No way someone can have that kind of movie experience at home unless they have Trumpian levels of money.
“I wanted a Dr Pepper!”
‘They didn’t have no Dr Pepper’
“only aholes drink Mr Pibb”
‘Drink up’..
LOL LOL BwaHaaHaa!!!
Sounds like some of the boys around here LOL
they have all of the best people for the job. lets hope it comes together!
Patriotic Americans should be withholding their business from Trump-hating Hollywood as much as possible...
True story of a Little Indian kid that gets lost and eventually adopted. Very moving
I did not know that Nicole Kidman got an Oscar nomination. That is awful. She was so bad it was distracting.
I saw it last night with Mrs. Hoagy. It was probably the best Marvel film I’ve seen to date. No political content, lots of humor, no sex, and a good ending. Marvel just set one heck of a high bar to get to for the upcoming “Infinity War” movie next year.
I was the supervisor on an antenna farm in Floyd Tx.
The company had a verbal agreement with this local gal who ran the local store that she would hire a crew to hay the 100 acres and she kept the profit of the hay.
All this was done verbally and before I became the supervisor.
The deal worked for years but one day I went n to order a cheese burger in her shop and a gal that worked for her said “when can we get in there to take the hay”
I told her send the crew out in 2 weeks as I am running tests at the time, I’ll show them where the fiber optic lines are so they don’t cut them.
On the appointed weekend the crew arrives and we do the deal and they start cutting.
About 4 hours later that feisty old gal they had the verbal agreement with the company showed up waving around a 44 Mag yelling cease and desist!
Wilma was ripping her off and duped me LOL on a verbal contract made before I was the supervisor.
To My Chagrin Wilma duped me and was ripping off her employer to the tune of 10k!
The cheeseburger wern’t great either LOL
Hell I had to call the Sheriff to sort it all out.
Gosh I love Tx
Saw it today. Make sure you stay through the end of the credits. Fun movie.
Good point.
I want to see Dunkirk NOW.
The rest of the Hollywood dreck, not so much.
I had one that abscessed over the weekend while I was set for a root canal on Monday. I was on a hundred and ten mile drive and my wife got mad when I took my fourth pain killer in two hours. She insisted I give her the car keys and we went back home. LOL
I've been watching a lot of foreign movies. Much better than Hollywood trash. Unfortunately, my wife doesn't like reading English subtitles when the audio is a foreign language, so I watch alone. Lot of excellent Korean movies, which surprised me. You can find lots of foreign movies on Netflix, etc. I no longer go to movie theaters, too expensive for a one-time watch of a movie versus relatively free at home.
I have seen about 1/3rd of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
I may have downloaded it. The story so far is about father son issues.... which I hate and the background music is mostly music from the 60’s/70’s rock which really really distracts.
If I were in the theater I would have walked out and asked for my money back. I guess I watch too much TCM movie classics.
Only good thing is Kurt Russell.
Let’s hope those losses hit quick. Market forces will make production companies think twice before releasing some anti-American propagandist BS on the silver screen
