Supporting one form of socialism over another is not saving anyone from socialism. I think Spain fared much better under Franco than they would have under a Soviet puppet.

Spain is a major American submarine base...
I think they’re our allies.

Joder, that’s a verb I never learned in four years of Spanish at my Catholic high school all those years ago...

Chevy Chase's joke (actually, a joke written by an SNL writer) was a reaction to an early instance of fake news--the incessant reporting of the death of Franco a few days earlier. It marked enough of a departure from the norm that mocking it registered with the public.

False dilemma. Spain started recovering only when the US decided to help, under Eisenhower. Kinda like how China started becoming strong after Nixon started helping them.

Spain is a major American submarine base... I think theyre our allies. I'm joking, of course, but it's because that country has become so inconsequential in the modern era. Their only lasting legacy seems to be the imprint of their language on the Americas.

I did a series of interviews with veterans for our local newspaper’s Veterans Day edition. One fellow was on a non-missile sub, based for a time in Spain.
Of all the ports he visited, Spain was the greatest with the greatest, friendliest people.
He said he could see himself living there in retirement...
