Did Trump Set Up Comey? President Warns Ousted FBI Boss There Might Be 'Tapes'
Daily Mail ^ | 05/12/17 | David Martosko

Donald Trump lobbed a veiled threat at the former FBI director on Friday, hinting that some of their conversations before his firing may have been recorded.

'James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!' the president tweeted.

It's unclear whether Trump was warning that the White House is recording his calls, or if he believes the FBI may have been recording Comey's. Trump said Thursday during an interview with NBC News that the two men have spoken at least three times since Inauguration Day.

And on those occasions, he insisted, Comey assured him that he was not personally the subject of any federal investigations. 'He said it once at dinner and then he said it twice during phone calls,' Trump said.

He described a matter-of-fact exchange over dinner in which he asked an unusual question and got an unconventional response. 'I said, "If it's possible would you let me know, am I under investigation?" Trump recalled.

'He said, "You are not under investigation".'

Oh, god. A president is recording everything that goes on in the White House. That worked out so well in 1972.

What was set up was 'the stage'...

As in Trump 'set the stage' to prosecute Hillary'...

That or he might be facetiously referencing Watergate and this time the tapes would exonerate rather than idict.

Did you read some of the maniacal comments following that post at that twitter link? The extreme loathing of the responders there goes way beyond all reason and understanding.

So Comey was working with the Russians trying to coordinate election fraud and now got tripped up in his own web of surveillance, yea, that’s the ticket.

The telephone calls and meetings of Presidents are recorded and become part of the National Archives. This would be well known to Comey. Trump’s comment likely is a gibe aimed at the much discussed NSA, FBI, etc., recording calls of Trump associates, and possibly Trump, during the campaign. I would refer that Trump stop grinding Comey. Firing him was enough. No need to generate sympathy by kicking him too.

Trump takes a few seconds out of his day to troll the media, probably getting a nice chuckle of of it. He rocks.

If Comey starts mouthing off on anything or is less than completely cooperative, he should get the Rosie ODonnell treatment.

Is DC a one party consent locale for recording?

I wonder if Trump interviewed comey at Trump tower in NYC?

I’m not the press, and that is how I read it.

Why is "tapes" in quotes? Could Trump be implying that Comey "taped" the conversation and that Trump has been made aware of the recording? Why do you go along with the interpretation that Trump "taped" the conversations?

Taping the conversation sounds like something Comey would do, not Trump.

This is hilarious - Snopes says on their fact check that this is a mixture of truth and fiction yet it states unequivocally that:

President Clinton fired FBI Director William Sessions on 19 July 1993, one day before Deputy White House Counsel Vince Foster, a longtime associate of the Clintons, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Not sure what mixture there is there when it is a fact

Firing him was enough. No need to generate sympathy by kicking him too

Comey is meeting with the Senate Intel committee investigating the Russian meddling in our elections. Given Comey's huge ego and sense of self-righteousness, I have no doubt that Comey will attack Trump in the closed door session. The attacks will be leaked immediately by the Dems.

There is no way Comey is going to take his firing laying down. Just listening to McCabe yesterday expounding on how loved and respected Comey is within the FBI, it is fair to say there will be plenty of leaks and attacks by his FBI loyalists defending their boss.

I doubt that Comey is loved and respected widely within the FBI. Feared is probably a better term. No doubt that the current leadership picked by him will support him. The new FBI Director needs to clean house and put an entirely new leadership team in place.

Trump just made a preemptive strike. It will not move the needle on the sympathy generated for Comey. The MSM and the Dems are taking care of that in spades.
