presidents can fire FBI directors at their discretion if the director breaks confidence- there’s a term for it that i can’t remember right now- something about ethics violations but comey fits the bill and trump can fire him as a result- president bill clinton fired his director of FBI sessions

I do understand that if Comey is shown to have been in the pay of the Chinese government, or has some scandal, that he can be asked to leave.

He can fire him for any reason. Even just to put his own guy in. FBI director has a maximum time he can serve of 10 years. But he has no protection beyond that.

Presidents can only fire FBI directors for incompetence—i.e., the FBI director failed to obtain and keep adequate blackmail files on the President. :-)
