The key take away from the book is that Obama's first beard had the wrong skin pigmentation. In other words he needed BOTH a sexual beard and a racial beard to advance his political career.

Certainly I recall callers to black talk radio in 2007/2008 discussing obama’s halfrican heredity, pale (and tanning) skin, lack of ancestral ties to slavery and segregation.
They certainly took some pride in seeing him with a dark skinned wife and said so.
