I know I’m in a minority, but saw the movies , but still can’t understand the storyline. To me, the movies were a series of disconnected skits of fight scenes , along with skits of Jack sparrow delivery wisecracks and one liners.
Just saying clearly I’m a minority considering what huge hits these movies were. But still can’t tell you what the movies were about.
I’m with you. Before I saw the first Pirates on DVD I’d heard it was so FUNNY. Well, the Sparrow character was funny-as little used as he was- but the movie was too chaotic. Frantic action, just plain ugly in parts. If they’d wanted to do a realistic, gory pirate film-fine, but lighthearted humor and serious violence don’t mix-IMO. Depp is one of those guys who looks better in period costumes and makeup. He made a good rum-addled, snarky Sparrow.
That’s pretty accurate. But it’s meant to be a bit of mindless fun.
It has never been about the plot.
they were ‘bout pirates, matey
Ditto. I’m up for sophisticated/complex movies (Primer, LotR, Memento); PotC tries to be but results in a mash-up of derangement. Individual scenes are great, but how they fit together is...well, they don’t. You’d think a movie geared for a broad audience would have a pretty clear & simple storyline from which set pieces are hung, but these have a constant undertone of “wait...how the he11 did he get to _here_ from...where the heck was he a minute ago? and who’s _that_?”
