As a practical matter, how do you tell the difference between a Bull Terrier and a Pit Bull?

They look nothing alike, for starters.

:D

Bull Terriers are a Dolichocephalic breed, having a long head, which is described as either ovoid or ‘egg shaped’.

“Pit Bulls” [no such official “breed”, really] are Brachycephalic and their skull is relatively broad and short.
(typically with the breadth at least 80% of the length)

The only vague similarity is the short, stocky body.

“Pit Bulls” were really created mixtures of Staffordshire Terriers [American or English] combined with other breeds.

As a matter of trivia, Willy was what Bull Terriers originally looked like.

Years of show ring breeding, with its mania for extremes, gave us the modern skull of Bullies, like this one

[pinging Tristan so my face can be rubbed in the fact that *I* do not have a Bully, too] :D
