CNN)When John Haygood, a 10-year-old boy with autism, was arrested last week at a school in Florida, he kept repeating that he didn't know what was happening, as seen in shaky cellphone video taken by his mother. "I don't know what's going on. I don't understand," he cried out. In the video, his hands are cuffed as two officers escort him to the back seat of a police car. His mother, Luanne Haygood, followed behind them while recording the incident on her phone. In the video, John appears distraught, and yells some profanities.
Luanne is heard in the video speaking to the officers, "Excuse me, do you have any paperwork or anything you can say to me?"

Your ignorance is astounding. You think autistics adhere to logic and consistency in every facet of life? Do ANY ten year olds do that? Autism is a diagnosis based on the presence of inconsistencies and/or “bad wiring”.
It’s a name they came up with for non professionals to make them sound more important. In this case probably a person with no or very little education or training in the field who was likely just paid to act as the kid’s personal attendant.
I don’t see how the adults in the room are the controlling factor. Why were charges brought? “Let’s put this uncontrollable kid into a normal classroom and then charge him with assault when the inevitable happens.” Insanity.
A paraprofessional is a person hired to work with/assist special ed students. It’s not uncommon for a special needs student to have his own paraprofessional as some disabilities require that much help.
A paraprofessional is not a licensed teacher, no degree required and the pay is usually right around minimum wage to start.
ridiculous...
He’s no Rainman.
its the LAW to send your kids to school....
... Attendant! That’s the word. That’s what I was. But not a “personal” attendant, you know.
that’s it....lets blame the mom....
I normally have a great deal of sympathy for people with mental and physical disabilities, but even I’m getting tired of the way autistic kids are being allowed to be just plain vicious.
This little punk in question had previously threatened to kill the paraprofessional; the school let it slide, and gave the punk multiple opportunities to change his behavior. He then escalates his behavior into felony assault, and his mother expects the school to let that slide, too?
So the poor widdle babykins doesn’t like to be touched? Well, people don’t like to be beaten up, either. I’m sick of hearing about how parents and teachers need to tiptoe around and use “strategies” to deal with these little psychos. Beat his @$$ with a belt when he gets violent; if the little diva-boy doesn’t like to be touched, he’ll quickly learn that he will be hurt when he hurts others.
I remember there was a kid like this in my class at school. In addition to being mean, he was also a pervert, bothering the girls. Boys and girls were all afraid of him, and of course, the teachers never did anything to intervene when he went on a rampage. One day, he started in on some girls, including my cousin. Tired of his B.S., she turned around and kicked him in the crotch so hard, that he screamed and fell to the floor.
Amazingly enough, that aspect of his “autism” was cured that day, and he never bothered the girls again.
To be more clear, kids with severe issues used to be sent to separate schools or separate classes, they now are legally forced to be in regular classes with normal kids. Not good for either group.
Screw you! The kid said one thing then did another!

So basically just an aide?
That's not necessarily so. Sometimes one or more paras are assigned to a classroom, not a particular child, and in the event the para or paras don't show up, it's just too bad for the teacher. She might have to deal with multiple developmental/behavioral problems up to including violence or diaper changing all by herself.
I'm sure it varies by school and district, but that is the reality of SPED teachers.
I agree. In some instances, children with such low functionality that they literally cannot tie their own shoes or hold a crayon are forced upon teachers with the demand that they teach them arithmetic and document their (required) progress.
It's all about the Benjamins.
Bingo.

Well as other FReepers, including myself have pointed out wonder if he really was.
Like I said he was screaming “I don’t want to be touched” when police arrested him yet he was “touching” a lot of others when he hit, kick, bite and did other things to them.
Think about it, to bite someone is very personal, yet he does not like to be “touched”? Okay I’m not buying it, the whole thing is a hoax.
Either way expel him since he can’t behave.
Exactly. We called them teacher’s aides way back in the 70s when I was in school.
Because he had a warrant out for his arrest
Sometimes parents contribute to their children’s behaviour....goid or bad
