Saskatchewan rancher Adrienne Ivey may have heard of a beaver, but until now, had never seen a beaver herd cattle, that is.
On Friday, Ivey and her husband were surprised to see 150 of their heifers crowded together in one of their pastures.
Curious about the strange behaviour, they investigated further, to find the herd of cattle following a beaver that had wandered along.
"He was out and about, I think looking for a new place to build a beaver lodge, and they were following him," Ivey said. "There was about a three-foot space around him. They didn't want to get closer than that."
According to Ivey, heifers are more inquisitive than the average bovine, which may have led to them following the beaver.
"They're a curious bunch," she said. "They're kind of like teenagers. And I think they were following this thing around because they couldn't figure out what the heck it was."
Ivey thought the odd event was even more notable considering the beaver is Canada's national symbol.

Nah. Too easy.
I’ve always heard (no pun intended) that cows are very inquisitive, and easily distracted by anything new out of place. Who knows, the beaver may have been either trying to run away from this big rumbling, ungainly group of cows, or inspecting the tall grass for bugs, and the damn cows would not stop following him.
Good explanation. Cows are curious critters. Beaver was likely looking for a new building area and they just followed him.
Here’s a bit of video:

Beavers pushing around heifers...happens all the time.
Lol — funny with or without beer.
No wonder cows wind up on the grill.
Bet the beaver is thinking wtf?
Keeping this one in the file.

Lots of hilarious animal videos!
The cows follow as well as democrats.
The day I called the State DNR about what to do about teh beaver eating my fruit trees I planted and they said “We dont’t control them, you do” was the day I got serious.
I look on google earth now where I used to live and there are still distinct craters where beaver huts once lived.
I still don’t see any signs the beaver ever came back.

Ugh. What kind of jackass takes videos in portrait mode?!
Hang the sucker in a smokehouse. YUMMY!
Back in another life a friend and I were playing guitars in a grove of trees surround by a large pasture. A herd of about 30 cows wandered up and surrounded us. We serenaded them for a 1/2 hour.
I don’t know why but your story made me think of John Belushi’s “Wilderness Comedian” skit on the old SNL.
Talk about another life. (grin)
They appreciated it. :)
I didn’t know that Madonna could herd cattle. My, what will she do next?
