Around 2005, I took my granddaughter to Everglades National Park. We were walking long the road and before long we began to see a lot of the brutes laying on the side. I was convinced- and still am -that if I had kicked one of them, I would have awakened it; it would’ve hissed, then slithered underwater. I had her mom take a photo of us on either side of the saurian. That evening I put the pic
on line and was deluged with scolding emails and what a horrid grandpa I was. I wouldn’t have done it if we’d been deeper into the swamp. The gators that hang out close to the road are so used to humans’ presence that they ignore us.
