This could only be considered offensive if Norman Bates actually were a Transgender / Transvestite. He is neither. He dresses as his mother because he believes he IS his mother in those moments. Having him kill as Norman shatters the glass wall separating those two personalities and actually ruins the story line.
Maybe trans-people believe they’re someone of the only other gender. That’s why they prefer to be called “They.”
