It’s more than that: women don’t want to date “low status” men. A woman with a PhD in sociology generally won’t want to date a man who is a plumber, even if he makes more money than she does. Conversely, the “bad boy” guitar player will get plenty of dates, even if he’s not making much money.

Women want to date the guy who their friends will be impressed with.

“Conversely, the “bad boy” guitar player will get plenty of dates, even if he’s not making much money.” Good to know. Maybe I’ll see some more grandchildren yet.

Old joke from my band days...

What do you call a guitar player without a girlfriend?

Homeless.

“Women want to date the guy who their friends will be impressed with.”

Most of them seem to have some very stupid friends, don’t they?

Couldn't the same be said of men? Men don't want to date women they perceive as less attractive than themselves (which is tricky, because men tend to overestimate their own attractiveness). The way I see it, men or women who pass up good men and women due to either the money bias or the looks bias pretty much deserve what they get. And they often get each other.

I've heard both in my experience. My best friend, his wife, said it was very important that he did his best to try to make more money than her. Just something she thought should happen.

My sister, I distinctly remember a conversation with her that was very “classist”. She would never data a plumber, or janitor, or anyone with a “lowly” job.
