Scientists don’t know whether the animal stranded itself or was sick.

Third possibility: Orcas. We now know that GW Sharks are basically toast when a pod of Killer Whales arrive on the scene. I've seen films of Orcas hunting. There's an intelligence there and they drive their prey, get ahead of it, cut it off. Wouldn't surprise me if the shark went into the shallows in an attempt to evade.

I was a video once of a GW shark off the Farallon Islands.

It moved in to attack a baby killer whale and the momma intercepted and chomped right down on that enormous shark.

Dolphins have been known to gang up on a shark as well. Being a young White, it was probably easy prey for either.
