It wasn’t the Mississippi River, it was the Tennessee River.

If Grant had been sober he’d have waited a day before crossing the river.

Sherman:Well, Grant, we've had the devil's own day, haven't we?"

Grant:"Yes. Lick 'em tomorrow, though."

Ulysses S. Grant

Is there a worse person on one of the common denominations of money than this guy? He's frequently on historians' top worst Presidents lists.

Quite a history lesson there Bull-snipe.

“Shiloh. Pittsburg Landing. April 6 - 7, 1862. Hardin County, Tennessee.”

and a pretty far piece from the Mississippi River.

Victor Davis Hanson, a familiar name on FR, has made a case that General Lew Wallace's bestselling novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (New York: Harper, 1880) is actually about the Battle of Shiloh, in which he participated.

Shiloh was the result of the Confederacy's attempt to protect Corinth which was the rail crossroads of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad and the Memphis and Charleston Railroad. The Confederacy abandoned New Orleans and Florida to reinforce the area around Corinth and brought in the Sterling Price's Army from the West (albeit too late). Grant was using the Tennessee River to get a large Army near Corinth with Pope from the Mississippi River and Buell from Nashville were to add to his troop numbers. Pope arrived on April 10th too late but Buell got there the night of April 6th. I live on the earthworks and site of a part of the Battle of Corinth.
