Internet slams Pepsi, Kendall Jenner after ad employs protest imagery

A new ad featuring model and reality television star Kendall Jenner is facing fierce backlash online Tuesday for depicting images of protests and riot gear-clad police officers in an effort to sell Pepsi.

Some of the more benign criticism online believed the commercial to be well-intentioned, but tone-deaf. The most pointed comments called the ad blatantly exploitative, as protest culture -- with the growth of Black Lives Matter and the mobilization of left-wing activists who “resist” the Trump administration -- experiences a renewed sense of prevalence.

In the two minute-long spot, Jenner models in a doorway as a throng of protesters march past. They carry innocuous signs -- some say “join the conversation,” others feature outlines of heart and peace symbols; after making eye contact with one beanie-wearing activist, Jenner sheds her blonde wig and dark lipstick and joins the crowd.

She proceeds to pop open a can of Pepsi, naturally, and weaves through the assembled group in order to hand a soda to a cop. The ad ends with the officer smiling and the protesters jubilantly cheering.

I’ve never understood the fascination with the coven of plastic whores known as the Kardashians...

I’ve seen tons of prettier women who are NATURALLY pretty and truth be told, you can take any number of plain women off the streets, spend a few hundred grand on their looks and wardrobe and achieve the same effect.

And I learned from “Mad Men” that Don Draper came up with that ad.

Rebelbase "Was that Saccharin diet Pepsi back then?"

The one I remember is Coke's Tab. It had a really weird distinctive chemical taste, a bit like cloves and saccharin. According to Wikipedia, Pepsi marketed a drink for about a year called Diet Patio, but then switched to the Diet Pepsi name about a year later. If I ever drank Patio, I don't remember it.
