SCOTUS Debate -- What if McConnell & Company *FORCED* the Dems to just do a REAL filibuster?

Hey, I know we are all willing to nuke the Demon Rats if possible.

But what if the Republicans FORCED the Demon Rats to just do A REAL filibuster?!

Make them talk and talk. Every day Mitch could remind people that the Democrats are obstructing a SCOTUS nominee that an overwhelming majority of the American people think should be approved.

Make Schumer stay up all night.

Screw em. Pull the trigger and let em know that Reid opened the can. Then shove the whole thing down their throats.

Yes, this thread is a bit embarrassing. Evidently people don’t know the difference between a filibuster and a cloture vote.

I was wondering about that - could McTurtle just adjourn the Senate and Trump does a recess appointment? Probably not.

*********

I think they could, especially since the Reps control the Senate.

But, I’m pretty sure recess appointments only last until the end of the current Congress, so that would only fill the seat until early Jan 2019. And then the seat would be open for a new appointment process that we just went through with Gorsuch. And that will be after the next mid-term elections, so who knows what the make-up of the Senate will be then, if the Reps will still be in control, and by what margin?

No, they need to nuke/Reid the filibuster for SCOTUS now (which essentially returns it to where it had always been as there had NEVER been a SCOTUS filibuster before on political grounds) and get Gorsuch on the bench for the next 30-something years.

Rule 19 would essentially do that, but with a pre-determined end to it.

By picking a judge with impeccable credentials who got all Dem votes the last time around, Trump is demonstrating on the live stage what Democrats really are.

The next one, perhaps a Ginsburg replacement, may not be as easy if they had not decided to filibuster and deny the seat.

They’ll really split a gut on the next one if he fills it the same.

Trump is like honey badger when it comes to the whining and screaming by the left.

Honey badger doesn’t care, he just does his work.

“”Make Schumer stay up all night.””

Come on - then we’d have to see him cry again because he’s tired. No thanks.. GADS! There are so many of them who just need to disappear off the face of the earth and spare us this distress/anguish/disgust/anger/revulsion....more?

Gorsuch is getting 55 votes. The rats are using this to solicit donations from the base. They know they aren’t winning this. But I will bet anything that if the rats take the senate in 2018 and Trump gets another pick, it will be Garland.

Yes, he could do that, but why? He still needs to get confirmed because he will need to step down at the end of next year. So, just confirm him now and he can stay on the court permanently.

From my understanding, cloture cuts off debate. Which means the Demon rats refuse to cut off debate. Doesn’t that mean they are filibustering (or threatening to do so)?

So if McConnell says, “We’re going to debate Gorsuch and call for a vote tonight”, the Demon Rats will have to keep talking until a vote for cloture cuts it off.

A filibuster would be forced until a cloture vote cuts it off.

Am I mistaken?

Filibuster is not lthe other side holding the floor to prevent a vote.

A filibuster is requiring 60 votes to pass.

You’re confusing the actual filibuster (such as what Ted Cruz did in the Senate.

However, that is not the “filibuster” that is happening in Congress over the Justice of the Supreme Court appointee, Gorsuch.

These are two different events.

Go to Rush Limbaugh’s website, and you might find an item about it .. because Rush was talking about it this morning.

I concur with the thought that the ought to be made to actually filibuster. It will be hysterical to watch the ossified, 70 and 80 year olds try to keep their mouths moving well after their bedtimes while deliberately blocking a supremely qualified jurist from sitting on the SCOTUS.

Let America see again, five months later, exactly how destructive the liberals are.

Just checked Senate Calendar.

This might get fun!

A real filibuster is more important - they cannot last.

If I had to listen to Chuckie talk non stop for ten hours? It’s either suicide or a mercy killing. No jury would convict me.

A filibuster is both those things. It depends on the context and the rules in play at the time.
