I agree with you. Internet photos of Chínipas, Chihuahua show a very rural landscape. If the landing strip looks like an deserted road, the kids may have had no reason to expect that a plane would land.
Shouldn't the pilot have scanned the landing strip before landing?
It's not clear to me from the information provided that the kids did anything that was obviously, extraordinarily dumb. This seems more like garden-variety bad luck.
