I had a black lab who just hated snakes. He would come home with his eyes swollen shut and his head as big as a basketball. The vet would give him a shot and a week later he would be right back at it again. He lived to age fourteen. He would leave them dead on the front porch as his trophies.
Here in Alaska, no snakes; miss them some. When I lived back east, I’d catch 5-6 foot black snakes on country roads after a summer rain. I’d walk up slow from behind and grab them behind head with my grip of steel; they’d coil up my arm and I’d make the wife shift the gears, as I drove home. I’d let them go around the house and my dog would kill about every one of them. He’d bite them in half with a shake of his head and you’d see two pieces of snake in the air.
I had a Springer/German Shorthair mix like that in college and just afterwards. Absolutely death on snakes. Smarter than most humans I knew and knew instinctually which she could play with and which to just kill. I miss that dog.
I have heard that anti-venom is so expensive now that vets don’t have it anymore. I would certainly hope that vet emergency 24/7 clinics have it but I am not sure.
