La Légion Étrangère (French Foreign Legion) still has the wooden arm of Captain Jean Danjou. In 1863, at Hacienda Camarón near Veracruz Mexico, three officers and 62 Legionaires held off 3000 Mexican Infantry and Cavalry until their ammunition was exhausted. Despite being defeated, the Legion so impressed the Mexican general that he called them demons. It was a complement.
