A city councilwoman is asking homeowners in an Oklahoma college town to rename a street honoring a prominent former university professor and Ku Klux Klan member.

Norman Councilwoman Breea Clark has posted an online petition asking residents to help change the name of DeBarr Avenue. If at least three-fourths of Norman homeowners agree, the city — home to the University of Oklahoma — would be among several cities nationwide renaming monuments and streets named after prominent KKK members. […]

The block-long street honors Edwin DeBarr, one of the university’s first professors and founder of its chemistry department. DeBarr became a grand dragon in the KKK while at the school, and regents forced him out in 1923 because of his Klan involvement. …

I’m not for re-writing history, but why was the street named after him after the disgraceful exit?

“regents forced him out in 1923 because of his Klan involvement.”

Interesting that they identify the guy as a Klansman and a University Professor (shocking!) but don't provide any details into his political orientation.

I'm pretty sure The Klan was a DemonicRAT stronghold in the 1920s.

Can West Virginia do that too? I would love to see Exalted Cyclops Byrd's name erased from everything. And he marked his territory on more things than a waterlogged dog.

Wonder if they are going to have to rename the hundreds of buildings, bridges and streets in West Virginia named after Robert Byrd, then?

You are so right.

“More than 50 buildings built with funds from US taxpayers directed to West Virginia are named for either Byrd or his wife...”

There is the modern-era Klansmen like Senator Byrd with the face having to be exposed with the top cover. The law has required the facial exposure for some time. The older Klansmen were just the modern version of the Spanish Inquisition—the real ones not the fake ones.

Is West Virginia going to un-name everything named after Robert Byrd?

Yeah, time for a national campaign to demand that the Byrd brain’s name be taken off every public facility. Every other federal building in WV is named after that KKK star. WHat a disgrace!

Historians note that in 1922, DeBarr was named Grand Dragon of Oklahoma, and he campaigned extensively for a Klan-supported candidate for governor, Democrat Robert H. Wilson. “DeBarr’s alleged activity in the recent Democratic primary in connection with the Ku Klux Klan occurred during the absence of Stratton Brooks, president of the university,” Muldrow said at the time, implying that DeBarr had gone behind the president’s back.

When asked to respond to the allegations, DeBarr said: “I have been greatly misrepresented. If 30 years of living and doing in Norman and Oklahoma are not a sufficient defense, then I have no other to make.”

It was the epitaph for his university career. He was forcibly dismissed in July 1923.

DeBarr also was known for his attacks against Catholicism. He went on to become “Imperial Kludd,” the title for the Klan’s national chaplain.

Maybe someone can start by removing Robert Byrd’s name from government buildings, shouldn’t be more that a few thousand of them.

...and here I thought that some OK Dems had named the street after Grand Dragon Robert Byrd, late of the U.S. Senate, who was idolized by Hillary Clinton.

My bad.
