That sounds more like a stalking scenario.
There may have been a promotion for locals via Groupon or their regular policy.
They have on their Facebook a promotion of a $50 gift certificate to the 1st 100 people who sign up at their youtube channel.
Left out of the story is the race of the waiter, much less an interview .
But, they don’t have waiters apparently.
You order from an iPad and a runner brings you your request.
The article indicates they were asked if they were locals, not if they were Americans or legal residents.
There is no reason to request I.D. except there being a promotions for locals.
Weird story a day I can’t imagine asking for I.D. for even a Russian or Chinese National. You’d just give your best service and work for that tip.
If the story is as purported then the waiter is a dick and should have been fired.
I don’t discount that either. The scenario as presented gives the impression that the waiter was inquiring about immigration status. I was wondering if there was something of a personal interest instead.

The fired waiter reportedly was not a new hire and had no similar actions in his history. Where is his story? Wrongfully terminated because of a $#!* storm on social media? Even the restaurant has deleted their own posts on this matter.
I could believe that there might be a “locals” special. There is a restaurant near me that offers 50% once a week if you present paperwork (ID or utility bill) to show you live nearby.
Democrat shills are getting hung up on the specifics of term "wire tapping" when no such linguistic-nazis ever try to make this case when someone talks about "videotaping" something. Who uses TAPE in this day and age? Certainly no smartphones contain "videotaping" capabilities, where is the tape?
