These eerie images aren't from a post-apocalyptic movie, they are photographs of several Olympic venues in Rio - just seven months after the games finished.
Despite promises from the organisers that the billion-dollar site would be used to benefit Brazil's citizens, it remains deserted and dilapidated.
The country remains in a deep economic and political crisis following the games and critics believe the money spent on the games could have been better spent on developing infrastructure in the country.

It wo0uld make more sense to build one permanent Olympic site in Greece, and use it exclusively from here on out.
Have it be a locus for other international sporting events as well, when not actively hosting the Olympics.
Every country that hosts the olympics makes money this is why they hope they get it. See your point however.
Would make sense to somehow reuse these sites over and over.
Host cities almost invariably fail to cover Olympics costs with associated revenues (for instance, in 2012 London took in $3.5 billion in revenues and shelled out something like $18 billion to host the games), leaving them with piles of debt and various useless venues. Research has repeatedly shown that in most cases the Olympics are a money loser for cities, particularly those in developing nations where the cost-benefit proposition tends to skew even worse.
I think Hungary made a good call in backing out of their Olympic bid.

Such a beautiful pool too, why do locals not use it?
The saddest one to me was the winter Olympic venue at Sarajevo. Those games had been a joy to watch, but warfare and abandonment had ruined everything.
1. The idea of hosting Olympics is pushed by local contractors who buy politicians to support it. They then make tons of money on the construction.
2.The design of construction is based on a life span of only a few months. Allowing the cheapest materials to be used thereby giving the greatest profit.
3. Any private entity or government would have to spend tons of money on maintenance and upgrade the durability of the structures for long term use.
4. It is like our wind farms. In 20 or 30 years they will be rusting hulks on our landscape. They simply are not profitable enough to be sustainable without government subsidies.
When a nation has to build so many very specialized and expensive facilities, most of them in one location, there is probably little likelihood that the facilities will, or even can be utilized fully in the future. Probably not enough people in the local populations with an interest in the very specialized sports facilities.
Large cites that already have most needed facilities probably fair best hosting the Olympics.
