Paramount wanted Robert Redford or Ryan O’Neal for the role of Michael. Coppola hung tough for Pacino. And always remember if Sonny Corleone had EZ Pass he’d be alive today.

I read the Godfather book in the summer of 1970 or 1971. Everybody was talking about the book and who would play the role of Don Corleone. Most of us thought Ernest Borgnine would be perfect for the part. Nobody thought anything about Marlon Brando, who had not worked since he gained about 50 pounds during the filming of “Mutiny on the Bounty”. Brando was washed up at that point in his career.
