On this day in 1972, The Godfathera three-hour epic chronicling the lives of the Corleones, an Italian-American crime family led by the powerful Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando)is released in theaters.
The Godfather was adapted from the best-selling book of the same name by Mario Puzo, a novelist who grew up in New York Citys Hells Kitchen and got his start writing pulp stories for mens magazines. Controversy surrounded the film from the beginning: Soon after Paramount Pictures announced its production, the Italian-American Civil Rights League held a rally in Madison Square Garden, claiming the film would amount to a slur against Italian Americans. The uproar only increased publicity for the movie, which Paramount was counting to become a big-money hit after the success of Puzos novel.

You definitely want to want The Godfather 3 and 4
They are masterpieces....
: )
Yes I agree with you the scenes from the 1920’s with DeNiro made that movie. I also thought Lee Strasberg who played Hyman Roth did an excellent performance.
The number one movie on my all time favorite list. It is amazing. However, if you ever saw it, your expectations would be so high, that......well, you know the rest.
You may know this, but here goes for those who may not:
When Coppola was making the movie there were many issues and problems with Paramount management. At one point he truly believed he was going to be fired. So he hired his father to play the piano (that is his hands in the scene when they are on the mattresses) and he hired his sister (Talia Shire) to play Connie. His primary reasons: "If they fire me, at least some people in my family will make some money"
Godfather,Godfather II,Goodfellas...the three best Mafia films ever made.
Casino was pretty good but not a classic.
You should see it. It’s a rare perfect combination of personalities. Greater than it’s parts.
ROTFL!
Okay, I snickered.
Ahhhhhh, Apollonia!
Damn you, Fabrizio!
I would love to have one of those shotguns his bodyguards carried.
That scene has a famous blooper in it. Compare the windshield after the first gun blasts with the windshield at the very end.
Its been said (even here on FR which is why I believe it) that Godfather II was one of the only examples in the history of film where the sequel equaled or even surpassed its predecessor as a cinematic masterpiece.
Then again, I am deeply saddened there was no follow up to Red Dawn, as I am not a deep thinker.
