Woman’s Headphones Explode After She Falls Asleep on Flight to Australia

MELBOURNE – A woman woke up to find her headphones on fire after falling asleep on a flight from Beijing to Melbourne, according to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

The passenger, who officials didn’t identify, was listening to music and had drifted off about two hours into the flight when she heard a loud explosion. “As I went to turn around I felt a burning on my face,” she said. “I just grabbed my face which caused the headphones to go around my neck.”

The headphones kept sparking, she said.

“I continued to feel burning so I grabbed them off and threw them on the floor,” the woman said. “As I went to stamp my foot on them the flight attendants were already there with a bucket of water to pour on them. They put them into the bucket at the rear of the plane.”

The battery, identified as the likely cause of the fire, and the cover, both melted and stuck to the floor of the plane, officials said.

Passengers were forced to breathe air tainted with the smell of burning hair and electronics for the rest of the flight. “People were coughing and choking the entire way home,” the woman said.

That makes sense. There’s really nothing in a standard set of headphones that can explode. Maybe they could electrocute you if plugged into an AC powered stereo and something went haywire.

On long haul flights like this (US to Asia or Australia or back the other way) I like to put on headsets and listen to classical music to go to sleep to

She looks more like an ELO listener, to me. Maybe Fire on High is what set it off.

The Doors: “Light My Fire”?

I’d really like to know what brand it is as well.

I use blue tooth Apatronics for all my outside stuff.

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD” Ir is the LITHIUM battery in the headphones. Those things are NOT allowed in Air-freight for that very reason. The can’t be shipped by air any more.
They can’t even be safely disposed of by people who change their own watch batteries.
How many people board planes wearing watches that have Lithium batteries, or cameras, or headphones?
Heaven forbid, but there will be a REAL disaster one of these days because of these things. People will have to be asked before they board a plane if they are carrying and devices containing these dangerous batteries.

Here is the ones I use:

https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Alpatronix-HX200-Noise-Isolation-Smartphones/dp/B00WAA5UUS/ref=pd_sim_107_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00WAA5UUS&pd_rd_r=NQCRFMJBNK781T64QFE3&pd_rd_w=yWOSJ&pd_rd_wg=keRI7&psc=1&refRID=NQCRFMJBNK781T64QFE3

I think they used to be closer to $50. I really like them, I hope they don’t explode on me. The worse case scenario would be asleep on a plane like this girl or underneath your skiing helmet.

Most will not have a clue.
