That is an often forgotten but important factor among many others for the war. It really was a conflict of cultures in many ways.

Imports. Products similar to those produced in the North had High import tariffs, while products similar to those produced in the South had low import tariffs. The import tariff laws strongly favored Northern industries, as did many other laws, such as the navigation act of 1817, which more or less created the Northern monopoly on shipping.
