What would you say was the primary difference in culture between antebellum north and south?

The easy answer to that is an agrarian versus a manufacturing society. The South had virtually none of the manufacturing capability that the North had, and was still somewhat in the thrall of the Jeffersonian idea of "yeoman farmers", as opposed to the idea of the more recent swing toward manufacturing that the North had embraced.

That sounds mainly economic, and it is, but it's also a reflection of the differences in culture with regard to their views of society.
