Generally, democrats operate on the idea that the “end justifies the means” while republicans follow the idea that the “means are more important than the results”. In a fight like we are currently engaged in, democrats have a distinct advantage. Fortunately, President Trump has exhibited a willingness to fight in a manor other republican haven’t.
I think of the quote often (rightly or wrongly) attributed to General Patton: “I would rather have a German division in front of me than a French one behind me.” I could envision President Trump stating: “I would rather have the entire Democrat Party opposed to me than John McCain and Lindsey Graham supporting me.”

I’ve always preferred that the ends are the only thing that matter and the means used to achieve them should sink to the level of your foe but not further.
