Yes. Video stills from the broadcast show Beatty holding an envelope that read “ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE”.

While there was no excuse to hand Beatty the wrong envelope, he damn well should have looked at the envelope. It’s called “woodshed your copy.”

More to the point, why don't they write "Best Picture" or "Best Actess" on the card itself. This would have immediately tipped off Beatty that there had been a mistake and the error could have been corrected without the chaos that resulted.

Humans make errors. That is a fact of life. When you want a human process to run smoothly you have to do whatever you can to eliminate the likelihood of mistakes. The designers of this process bear more of the blame than those carrying out the process.
