Whoa, this.
Muslims fast during Ramadan.
How rare is diabetes among Muslims?
Headlines can be so entertaining. This one makes one wonder why anyone would want a regenerated diabetic pancreas.
“Professor Anne Cooke, professor of immunology at the University of Cambridge, commented: “This is good science and does give promise for the future treatment of diabetes, but we need further studies to see whether this works in people as well as it has in mice...”.
Nice backhanded British compliment.
This is good science (sound methodology). Treatment for diabetes. IN MICE.
I met a guy who did this. It worked.
They don’t do a true fast. They just don’t eat between sunup and sundown mecca time. So maybe they just skip lunch and then gorge themselves stupid after dark.
Saudis have some of the highest diabetes rates in the world because they pound down sweet drinks in a hot climate with alcohol prohibition.
To get information about how to do fasting the right way check out Dr. Jason Fung. He is curing Type 2 diabetes with fasting coupled with low-carb diet.
Dr. Thomas Seyfried recommends a 7-day water fast to clear out cancer cells, a process known as autophagy.
They only fast from dawn to sunset; this is not fasting in the sense of the article.
“They then examined the pancreas.”
Do you have any idea how you “examine” a pancreas?
A pancreas is not a gall bladder.
My Dad did it. Worked for him.
Fasting is a good practice. Caloric restriction over all helps you live longer.
Just fast 24 hours once a week.
They eat in the moonlight. Sleeping during the sunlight.
I have heard about this. Supposedly 3 days at less than 600 calories a day.
Bump for later reference
They eat after sundown so it’s not an all day fast.
Heck of an idea unless you die from hypoglycemia. Cutting carbs to low status when you body isn’t accepting them already due to insulin resistance can be dangerous.
I passed out from hypo a few years ago and woke up with 5 firemen in my bedroom bringing me back. I hadn’t eaten properly and my sugar count got down to 35. I don’t mess with this. I control it, but I don’t gamble on it.

I’m pretty sure obesity is a risk factor for diabetes, but sugar by itself isn’t.

It works. I did it myself.
If you have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, you shouldn’t attempt a fasting diet without first seeking medical advice. A sudden change in your calorie intake could have unpredictable effects and lead to complications.

Homicidal grumpiness due to extreme hunger comes to mind. Some sort of anesthesia needs to go along with this starvation treatment.
