Vice News ^ | February 22, 2017 | Clare Richardson

The behemoth sports stadiums on the sprawling grounds of Rio’s Olympic Park were built to impress international visitors for the 2016 Summer Games. Today, they are eerily deserted. The space reopened as a public recreation area in January, but aside from the occasional security guard, there is hardly a human in sight at the 2.5 billion real ($800 million), 300-acre complex.

The so called Olympic Park shows Brazil still has a fascination with soul crushing Modern Architecture, a la Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer. Who would want to hang out on concrete under the hot sun?

Fun youtube video on all the Olympic sites. Looks like a dystopian nightmare:

Your post made me think of the original Rollerball movie for some reason. :-)

I thought Olympic facilities were built with some definite future use as part of the plan. I guess not.

On track to become the most modern new Favela in Rio. Can’t wait to see what it looks like in 5 years or so...

It probably was, and they probably lied outright to get it built.

The Olympics allow politicians to extort money and play quid pro quo. Donors to politicians reap the rewards of lucrative boondoggle contracts, while the city is left paying the bills for decades, forever. Meanwhile some FAKE sports are played by FAKE athletes, watched by FAKE fans that pay big dollars for tickets while tax deducting them as business entertainment expenses.

The Olympics now represent the WORST of humanity. Put a bullet in the Olympics...

Five centuries from now, explorers will happen across this place in the jungle and wonder “how many human sacrifices happened here”?

I think LA also did well facilities wise in 1984 since they they had suitable facilities already available for most sports.

Some oddball things like small stadiums for beach volleyball, or baseball fields in countries that don't play baseball might be hard to use in the future, but there seems to be little excuse for building outdoor stadiums and indoor arenas that can't be used after the Olympics are over.

That’s part of the selling process but it’s a lie. I was relieved when Boston lost out in the bidding war.

Just have Greece have the games or design and build structures that can be dismanteled and sent to the next city, like a circus.

I know many people that go to Lake Placid to ski Whiteface. Lots of them love the experience of a trip down the bobsled run too.

Of course, Lake Placid was a winter tourist destination before the Olympics ever came there.

The only real fun in the Olympics was trying to figure out just how the East Germans were going to cheat THIS time.
