I remember when Jimmy Carter wanted to impose the metric system on the US.

Aha!
They’ll again be able to quote prices in pounds per pound.

I was in England in 2006 when there was a heat wave and the temperature reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The newspapers even had headlines saying 100 degrees.
In Canada, if that were to happen, probably half of the population wouldn't understand the headline, they have been using Celsius for so long. I was told some years ago by a Canadian that her younger brother had never learned the old measurements (the ones still used in the US).

My British friends will be happy. Although the metric system is as entirely arbitrary as the “English” system, it has some good aspects. The Brits will now be free to take the good and discard the bad. Litres per mile just didn’t ever seem right, even though their “gallons” are messed up as it is! LOL

The English know how to pour a pint.

So, what then will happen?
Will British mechanics need to buy a full set of Whitworth spanners?

Bring back the old money — Pounds, Shillings and Pence. (12 pence (d) to the shilling, 20 shillings (s) to the pound. 1 pound 5 shillings 3 pence would be written: £1 - 5 / 3 or £1 5s 3d)

Dumb. The International System is far superior to the idiotic system of hogsheads and gills. The American public, collectively, does not seem have the mental capacity to adopt another system.

I remember when Jimmy Carter wanted to impose the metric system on the US.You're right. I had forgotten.
THIS country is doing just fine without the metric system.

A definite step backwards!

Ah yes., I remember it well. All the Lib “back-to-the-earth” magazines started printing all their how-to-do projects in metric.
I bought a yard light several years back. The large screws holding the light up to the wall were not metric, but they also were not standard. Had to use an adjustable wrench for them.

I remember when Jimmy Carter wanted to impose the metric system on the US.
I spent 25 years with the State of Alaska DOT as a draftsman - preparing right of way maps, highway construction plans and survey maps/plats.
In March of 1992 President George Bush I signed an executive order forcing all states receiving FHWA funding for roads and bridges to use the metric system, so we did - and it was a gigantic pain in the neck. Since many of our maps ended up being part of the public record, we had to show dimensions in both metric and English, which made for some pretty crowded drawings.
Thankfully, when the Republicans gained control of congress in 1994 Newt Gingrich and his crew said: "forget that metric garbage", in so many words - and so we did.
Had that not happened, every mileage sign on federally funded highways in our country would be in kilometers today.

I like the English system myself, principally as a means of torturing small children in grade school. Word problems, baby. “If a horse with a cart wheel with a 13 3/4 inch radius travels a furlong in a fortnight, what percentage of the speed of light is the rim of the wheel moving at? Answer in Joules, please.” Make the little buggers sweat, that’s what I say...
