Settle in fro a lot of men means a lifetime of boring sex. Some men, regardless of their physical attributes, can't handle that so they pursue the endless dream, or they get some one pregnant in a drunken tryst, or they give up the dream.

There is social status among men in having a hot wife/partner. There is no status in having a homely wife i.e. settling. Sorry but this is just reality. The older you get this means less and less but the reality still exists.
