The nearby Sears has resembled a Ghost Town for years. There are no more Customer Service agents to offer much help anymore. They always say ‘Go online. You may see something there.”

Some of the older clerks won’t (or can’t) help you order from the store’s computer. I had to ask a young lady in the jewelry dept. help me order some pants, after the older clerk said “We no longer order these products from the computers on the floor.” I knew that didn’t make sense, he was either too lazy or didn’t want to bother learning how to submit a Customer Order at the register. But I was not going to stand there arguing in that big quiet store. Since then, I have learned how to order on my own home laptop if I wish to.

"Sheen-bro" [English translation: "Machine is broken"] is the standard Ebonic excuse for any difficult or mildly complicated task. Just try to order ice cream at any "diverse" McDonald's and you'll have 80% odds that the machine will be "broken" or otherwise out of order. On the other hand, go to any Chick-fil-A for the world's best milkshake -- and you'll get it. What's the difference? Selective hiring and a corporate culture that instills, reinforces and rewards a solid work ethic.
