A relative of mine was notorious for keeping things people handed to him. Hand him a cigarette lighter, he’d light his cigarette then put the lighter in his pocket. You ALWAYS had to remind him who the lighter belonged to. ANYTHING you handed to him he’d put it in his pocket. He was not a thief. It was just his habits.
I’ll bet his was *tidy* about other things in his life.

I used to carry a 75-100 dollar Cross Pen because of that.
If you are using a 1.98 Papermate/generic pen and someone pockets it, you shake your head and walk away mumbling or may not realize it till too late.
Hand someone a Cross Pen and I would wait for it and NOT be ‘ashamed’ to ask for it..
Not really the money but the inconvenience of finding another pen etc...(Well, the money also)
Of course he was a thief, just nonchalant about it.
