Hey everyone. Just in case you've been wondering . . .
Well, I bought a brand new computer at a good price. But it is so blasted different from anything I'm used to that it's running me nuts.
First I couldn't figure out how to hook the thing up (being unused to these contemporary power cords) and wound up taking the thing back to the store the very day I bought it. Okay--that's one hurdle.
Then I had trouble turning it on. Then I couldn't increase the text size in my browser without increasing the size of the tab as a whole. Then Adobe Flash player started crashing and refused to work in my favorite browser, and probably would have begun doing so in the others as well. I went back to the store a third time and got some advice which turned out to be incorrect.
Flash quit working because the HP updater asked me to download some updated drivers. I don't even know what a "driver" is, so I did so, thinking whoever built this thing knew what they were doing. Evidently not, as the old original (un-updated) driver had to be put back in before Flash would work again.
The extremely hidden function I was told to go to to increase font size alone was for something else altogether, but I managed to find the browser menu tab (it was hidden) and now have that function again.
The most recent "adventure" involved making a new data disk. First InfraRecorder wouldn't even open (well, it did at the very beginning, but then it stopped). Then after that was fixed there was the problem of getting it to actually work, since it absolutely would not do so like it used to on my old computer. Turns out there's a bunch of runarounds you have to perform to get everything on the project (plus I needed to learn how to create a special folder for my text documents alone, which I had trouble doing). It was all so complicated; I'm being extremely brief in explaining all this, but believe me, it took time and frustration.
And how did I get all this done? Who helped me, a total computer ignoramus (after two decades online!) to finally get this thing back to some semblance of what I was familiar with? A fellow brony in Sweden, whom I met in a chatroom, has been in my computer three or four different times, one time for hours figuring this thing out for me. Don't tell me it doesn't pay to be a brony. I have taken up so much of his time, and he's been so nice about everything. Without him I'd have maybe just taken this thing back to the store. I don't know what I would have done then.
I'm quite sure there'll be yet another problem tomorrow (and probably each day after that for a while), but if I can just hold on and get used to this thing . . . !
Anyway, that's where I am right now. And remember, if you want to give me advice, just remember no hablo computerese.
I had the salad bar for dinner. Posting from a used 3rd generation kindle keyboard that I paid $27.50 for. Always works. Oh yeah, honey mustard dressing.

I would not mess with a computer or an internet if I hadn’t
had to use a word processor to do my office work. Started
out on a TRS-80 (now a covered wagon in computer types).
- Then Fang got me a newer one, then refurbished ones. I
crip along and somehow manage. Ya’ll don’t complain about
my typing. Fang has retired and has his own setup that he
does ebay stuff on. (He’s a workaholic.)
Not sure if this is satire or not, but for Christmas I bought myself a Gigabyte gaming laptop. It absolutely screams! I love it! 26 gigs of RAM and this beast starts up in less than 10 seconds.
16, not 26.
LOL! I had to get a new printer a couple of months ago. I hsd to go back to the store twice and it still took me half the day to figure out how to hook it up.
I was having trouble with my old laptop running Ubuntu 9.03. So I bought a new micro desktop that was converted from a NUCs platform. It was easy to hook up, had Ubuntu 16.02 already installed, and is not attractive to windows or apple bugs. It is only about 4.5 x 4.5 by 1.5 inches in size, with lots of ports.
I plugged the custom keyboard, a monitor, with a mouse on one side and a trackball on the other.
It works great for me, but I had to go to the net to download an open source image processing software package.
It boots up in about 30 seconds and shuts down in about 4.
I really like the Linux Ubuntu build.

Love my sleek giant iMac. VaVOOM! Hooked that baby up in 10 minutes. Watched an Apple tutorial and I was good to go.
