A British man who volunteered to join Kurdish fighters in Syria faced imminent capture by the Islamic State terror group -- and chose to kill himself rather than become a prisoner, his parents told U.K. media on Wednesday.

Ryan Lock, a 20-year-old chef from West Sussex, had no military experience but felt compelled to lend a hand in the terror fight, Sky News reported. His parents said he told them he'd be vacationing in Turkey last August, but instead joined the Kurdish militia known as the YPG.

Wonderful news that our strong allies, the Kurds, can finally get some help.

What a terrifying choice he had to make. Lord have mercy on his poor soul.

It looks like this Briton followed the advice Rudyard Kipling gave in the last stanza of the poem, "The Young British Soldier."

I have been told that suicide does not send you to Hell rather you enter judgement having committed the sin of taking a life. We can be sure that our God is pure, merciful, loving and just - so we sinners can only speculate as to how this is judged. Prayers

I believe that the circumstances of the suicide need to be considered -- Erwin Rommel killed himself after being told that if he didn't, his family would be killed. Hard to fault that.

This individual's suicide was essentially a mercy killing, which is of course not kosher, but considering the duress he was under, and what damage could be done with information extracted from him, he can't be judged. I also pray that this brave man is in God's presence.
